National Pan Hellenic Council
Macon – Middle Georgia Council
The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. (NPHC), also referred to as the Divine
Nine, is the umbrella organization housing nine black Greek-letter
organizations. The NPHC was founded at Howard University in Washington,
D.C. on May 10, 1930, and incorporated under laws in Illinois in 1937. Its
member organizations include Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Kappa
Alpha Sorority, Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity,
Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Zeta Phi
Beta Sorority, Inc., Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc., and Iota Phi Theta
Fraternity, Inc. The goal of the National Pan-Hellenic Council is to promote
unity among its member organizations and address problems of mutual
interest to those organizations. The NPHC strongly supports cooperation
between graduate and undergraduate chapters within each organization as a
means of building community. NPHC organizations maintain graduate
chapters where individual fraternity and sorority members can continue the
public service work in their communities that began during their undergraduate years. The NPHC encourages
this continued participation to build a larger, stronger network to accomplish the social, educational, and
political goals of the council and of each member fraternity and sorority. The NPHC recognizes that graduate
chapters also bridge the gap between campus communities and neighborhood communities and tries to
encourage cooperation between the undergraduates and graduates. The NPHC continues to promote the vision
first articulated in 1930, and the cooperation of its individual member organizations helps promote African
American political unity, educational progress, and cultural uplift. (blackpast.org)
By Gregory Brown, Immediate Past
President
After years of inactivity in the Macon community, life was brought back to the Macon – Middle Georgia: NPHC
on Sunday, January 31, 2016. The idea to reactivate the MMG-NPHC began in 2010, with several Greek unity
activities taking place over the years to include, organizational meetings, Greek Mixers, Voter Registration Drives
and Greek Unity Cookouts. The newly reactivated council was first led by President, Sekema Harris Harmon
(Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.) from 2016 – 2018; then by President, Gregory L. Brown (Phi Beta Sigma
Fraternity, Inc.) from 2018 – 2020, and now current President, Vanessa Williams (Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,
Inc.) 2020 – 2022. To jump start many of the service initiatives that impacts the Macon-Middle Georgia
community, the council geared up to support the National NPHC United 4 Service Project. This project is a
community service initiative focused on collaboration and joint programming among NPHC organizations to
celebrate the founding of the NPHC. To demonstrate a unified effort in the community of service, the MaconMiddle Georgia NPHC has partnered and supported key organizations since 2016.
