ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INCORPORATED
Brenda Youmas, President
On January 15, 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority®, Inc. became the first Greek-letter organization established
by and for African American college educated women. Her roots date back to Howard University in
Washington, D.C., where the idea for formation was conceived by Ethel Hedgeman (Lyle). Her principles are
Sisterhood, Scholarship, and Service. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® was founded on a mission
comprised of five basic tenets that has remained unchanged since the sorority’s inception more than a
century ago. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority’s mission is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical
standards, promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems
concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in
college life, and to be of “Service To All Mankind”. After her incorporation as a perpetual body in 1913, Alpha
Kappa Alpha Sorority branched out and became the channel through which selected college-educated
women improved the socio-economic conditions in their city, state, nation, and the world. She has a
membership of more than 300,000 women bound by the bonds of sisterhood and empowered by a
commitment to servant-leadership that is both domestic and international in its scope.
HER LOCAL HISTORY: EPSILON OMEGA OMEGA “SISTERHOOD”
Serving the Middle Georgia Community for over 65 years – 'A Vision Fair'
It was with the hopes, sweat, and tears along with the dreams and prayers of eleven young ladies, that they
could establish a chapter in Macon, Georgia. "We all enjoyed some beautiful fellowship and experienced some
pleasurable moments working on community projects with the Fort Valley Chapter; however, we had a sincere
desire to bring some of these successful activities to Macon, and in the meantime, not have to continue
traveling to Fort Valley". – Eddye Mae Booth, Epsilon Omega Omega Sole Surviving Charter Member-71
years Active Membership
On a beautiful spring afternoon on May 3, 1952 at the Georgia Training School for Girls on Camp Wheeler
Road in Macon, Georgia, Epsilon Omega Omega was chartered with eleven members: Palmira Braswell*,
Addie C. Brewer*, Eddye Mae Booth, Gladys Dudley*, Ruth Johnston*, Ada L. Price*, Lottie Price*, Margaret
Sheftall*, Ruth Stevenson*, Aquilla J. Thompson*, and Martha Ann Wheeler. The first initiates were Pearline
Goldsboro and Moneta Price*. Since the chartering of the chapter over sixty-five years ago, the membership
has grown with active members who reside in Bibb County and the surrounding counties in the Middle
Georgia area. Epsilon Omega Omega has thrived and survived through the dedication, commitment and
service of its members and strong leadership.
EPSILON OMEGA OMEGA EXEMPLIFYING EXCELLENCE THROUGH SUSTAINABLE “SERVICE”
Since 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated has implemented programs of service impacting
countless lives worldwide. The 2018-2022 program theme of the International President, Dr. Glenda Baskin
Glover is Exemplifying Excellence Through Sustainable Service through five International Target Programs.
TARGET 1: HBCU FOR LIFE: A CALL TO ACTION
Epsilon Omega Omega promotes, supports and markets Historically Black Colleges and Universities. We
encourage students to attend HBCUs, complete their course of study, and receive their college degree.
Activities include holding events, such as HBCU Expo, HBCU Alumni/Student Meet & Greet; and partnering
with The Douglass Theatre’s HBCU Arts Series. Recognizing that HBCU funding is one of the primary
obstacles that threaten the long-term growth and survival of HBCUs, Alpha Kappa Alpha implemented an AKA
HBCU Endowment Scholarship Initiative. In 2018 and 2019, Alpha Kappa Alpha raised over one million dollars
in one day, respectively to support HBCUs.
