Since my scholarship being awarded in 2018, I have maintained a 3.79 cumulative GPA. I have also been actively involved in some community service initiatives in the Blacksburg community. I am so grateful each day for the opportunity to learn in an environment where I enjoy and thrive. I am thankful to have been a scholarship recipient. Your
program has done SO much for my college career and I am extremely grateful. Thanks for recommending me for Our

Thank you so much for the scholarships. I am reaping the benefits of this opportunity, and am greatly enjoying my

2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 Joyce K. Peterson Legacy Scholar
As I look back on the past three and a half years I am thankful and blessed for the amount of growth I have experienced. The opportunities that I have been able to take part in throughout my college career is in part due to the many
blessings, prayers, and encouragement from Alfred Street Baptist Church and the Alfred Street Baptist Church Foundation. My ultimate career goal is to become a licensed clinical psychologist and work with African-American youth
suffering from trauma and race-related stress. After I graduate in May, I will be taking a gap year in order to become
an even more competitive applicant for graduate school. I trust that God will lead me on a path that is meant for me as
everything happens within His plan.
Mario Menendez (Montgomery Blair High School)
University of Maryland – College Park - Marketing
2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 SunTrust Foundation Scholar
Freshman year 2016: Knowing that I have the support of scholarship donors, institutions, and organizations has
grounded my collegiate journey around community and a sense of "it takes a village." Personally, it took a village
to get me to where I am today and where I will go in the future. Each day, with the help of the Alfred Street Baptist
Church Foundation Scholarship, I am one step closer to being the first in my family to pursue their higher education in the United States and leaving an impactful legacy at the University of Maryland. Senior year 2020: Four
years, two degrees, five study abroad countries, and countless hours of community service later, I will walk the
stage as one of the top students in my graduating class. Post-graduation, I will be a Creative Technology Fellow
at You & Mr. Jones (an advertising/technology firm) in New York, NY, followed by a two-year rotational program
at Capital One in Plano, TX. In the near future, I hope to pursue an MBA at Harvard Business School and continue
my legacy toward changing the world.
