Family fishing in Algoma is an accessible and
extremely easy, affordable, and fun way to get away.
With so much water and so many unpressured lakes
and rivers, families can explore freely in hopes of
creating memories to last. With Algoma just an 8-hour
drive from Toronto, or simply across the border from
Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, a long weekend away in
Algoma is perfect for a quick adventure trip away.
We arrived at our cabin, got settled and all sat
down to plan the next two days of adventuring. All
the kids wanted to do was fish. Jen, my better half,
was laidback and we both were keen to let the boys
have fun doing whatever they wanted, be it hiking,
swimming, lying around and reading (yeah right) or
going fishing.
After they decided they wanted to fish both days, we
broke out the cards and played a few rousing games
of Crazy Eights (the kids wanted to play). After a few
hands, the boys went to bed and we poured a glass of
wine and sat out by our private bonfire ring to talk, to
catch up. Let’s be clear, we did not discuss homework,
shopping, bills, visiting family and all the other things
that make up our day-to-day…We actually talked! The
night was cloudless and warm. It was idyllic.
The next morning after a wonderful breakfast, we were
on our way, maps in hand, rods at the ready. The kids
had a blast catching and releasing fish most of the day
which was simply wonderful to watch. The day was
perfect with the boys only putting down their fishing
rods periodically for a dip in the lake. We fished until
mid-afternoon and decided to head back to the cabin
to freshen up for dinner. Lots of fish were caught and
lots of laughs were had.
It’s a nice thing to experience, coming back from a day
on the water to find dinner made and waiting for you
at the lodge. We ate family style, all together, at one
table and recalled our day on the water. We headed
back to the cabin for evening festivities; not before
however the boys swam once again from the beach.
Crazy Eights and campfire ensued under the stars,
and we all tucked in early to be ready for the next day’s
adventures.
This is a typical family fishing weekend one can
experience in many of Algoma Country’s fishing lodges
and outfits. Sure, the fishing is the reason for making
this family trip to Ontario’s north, however, the benefits
to every single family member are invaluable. It’s been
a year since that trip and our boys still talk about it like
it JUST ended. Watching them smile by campfire light,
watching them beam with the catch and release of
trophy smallmouth bass, watching Mom smile at her
kids playing on the beach and not having a literal care
in the world makes these trips so very important.
We did the same thing the following day – Fish, eat,
sleep repeat and it was perfect!
I used to dislike playing cards…now, I can’t wait for the
boys to break them out.
