progress (through the frank marginalisation of
the medical model in mental health). The state
budget included 82 mental health beds and 198
new psychiatry registrars over the next four years —
which have gone some way to assuage our concerns.

PUBLIC HOSPITALS
––
The building of a new hospital in Melton and
expenditure to permanently double emergency
department capacity in Casey and Werribee Mercy
are both supported by AMA Victoria. We will continue
to strongly advocate that all new builds are ‘green
builds' to support the transition to a net zero
economy. We would have also liked to have seen
funding allocated for the repair and maintenance
of ageing public hospitals across the state including
our large tertiary centres such as The Royal Melbourne
and The Alfred, however we will continue campaigning
on these issues towards the State election.
Nobody suggests that this budget solves our
problems, and we all know a mature conversation
must occur on a national level between all states
and the Federal Government about the funding and
responsibility for healthcare provision in Australia.
We are proposing that Victoria take the lead in this.
However, this is a good start for Victoria, and
please be assured that we have been influential in
shaping the announcements — just as we equally
played a role in the recent announcement of a $3,000
bonus for public healthcare workers. We look forward
to working with the State Government in delivering a
healthcare-led recovery for our state and continuing
to work on the unresolved and challenging problems
the health system faces, playing out most acutely
today in our emergency departments.

DOCTOR MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING
––
On a final note, I am pleased this edition of Vicdoc
focuses on doctor mental health and wellbeing. It
is an important and timely topic, but we absolutely
acknowledge that broader systemic issues in our
healthcare workplace must be resolved if we are to
truly support the wellbeing of doctors. AMA Victoria
will continue to lobby the government for a safer,
fairer workplace for doctors and will always support
ways to improve the healthcare system for all doctors
— for a system that does not care for its doctors
cannot properly care for its patients.
