Torn By a Schoolday in Spring
Crumbling grey asphalt crawls past
dragging fume-murdered weeds;
electric blue cosmos billows
cradling white-hot distant sunspot;
sensuous breeze whispers river-secrets
just for me;
Playful cottonwoods laugh silently
and beckon with slender arms.
Do not succumb, authority shouts, threatens.
Ethereal dreams absorb hurled didactions;
dry brittle pages dissolve in clouds of speculation.
Executives and carpenters drive by unaware,
Heedless of my invisible tug-of-war.
Crossroads approach feverishly.
Voices fling possible futures;
Butterflies sing present joys;
compromise:
My heart, on iridescent wings, floats left, content;
Head, filled with sanctimony, rolls right.
