learning that rice was not on the
menu, I settled for papaya from
a barrow as I made my way to
the class. I had learnt to choose
papayas that looked past their
‘sell by’ date as they were deliciously ripe.
Iyengar had informed us the
night before that the class was
to be at 10 a.m. So I arrived at 10
to find Sir holding out both
hands. ‘Where were you?’ he
asked. ‘You have missed it. We
started at 8 a.m.’ In India people
