You might want to hang on to your hat because if
you’ve never heard what I am about to explain, you will likely
be shocked at how far the writer of Matthew went to corrupt
Isaiah 7.
What is really happening here is that Ahaz, the king
over the Southern Kingdom of Israel, is preparing to be
attacked by armies in the Northern Kingdom. He is in great
fear, so God sends his prophet Isaiah to reassure Ahaz that his
kingdom will not be defeated. Isaiah also tells the king the
Lord is going to send a sign when he is about to intervene and
protect his kingdom.
The sign will be that Isaiah’s wife, a young woman, will
bear a child, who she will called Immanuel (God is with
us). When the boy reaches the age where he is able to
discern between good and evil, God will intervene and Ahaz
and his kingdom will be spared.
As you can see, Isaiah 7 has nothing to do with a savior
named Jesus. Jesus didn’t show up on the scene until 700
years after this story, so it makes zero sense he would’ve
been God’s sign to Ahaz.
