Jesus: Messiah or Myth? - Book - Page 21
Here is the passage in the Hebrew bible:
“Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign;
Behold, an Almah shall conceive, and bear a son, and
she shall call his name Immanuel.” Matthew 1:23
It’s interesting to note that everywhere else in Tanakh
where the word “Almah” appears, Christian translators
translate it correctly as “young woman.”
One final mistranslation in this verse has to do with
Matthew distorting who actually gave the name Immanuel to
the child. In the Hebrew Scriptures, it clearly states the
mother will name the child. But Matthew says, “They shall
call his name Immanuel.”
My best guess here is that Mathew edited this to make
it seem like a group of people would proclaim this “miracle”
as though they were the witnesses of some divine
phenomenon.
Slick move but there’s just no getting around the truth
of Isaiah 7. Diagnose it all you want to but Matthew’s
account of the virgin birth is literally dead on arrival.
