I had a friend years ago whose husband was cheating
on her. Unfortunately, she was the last to know because
despite the man’s highly suspicious behavior, she chose to
stick her head in the sand and pretend everything was
“business as usual.”
It got to the point where he stopped coming home on
certain nights of the week and would show up at 5 a.m., just
in time to shower, change, eat breakfast and go back to work.
When she told me about it, I was convinced he was
seeing another woman. But she refused to believe it until the
day he announced to her after one of his all-night
rendezvous, he had found the love of his life and wanted a
divorce.
I’m sure hearing this story you are thinking to yourself
how naive and gullible my friend was to even consider there
might have been some other reason why her husband was
staying out all night. But trust me, this is a true story that
also turned out to be a cautionary tale about not paying
attention to what’s right in front of you.
Along my journey out of Christianity and into the light
of the One, True God of Israel, I learned that it’s not all that
uncommon for believers in every religion to take what they’re
told at face value even when things don’t quite add up.
The truth of the matter is that sometimes it’s so much
easier to go along with the program than make waves. This is
especially true in today’s world, where plenty of people have
abandoned their friends and family members for not agreeing
