and a £30,000 scanner.
These changes in technology were echoed in the shop which also
served the local community. Expanding from stationery into office supplies,
the shop sold typewriters, Letraset and Dymo punch labels and later word
processors and computer supplies. Both sides of the business provided
essential products and services for the growth of local guesthouses, hotels,
and tourist attractions.
Unfortunately, this reliance on local business meant that as tourism
declined in Thanet, so did Martell’s trade until only the Northdown Road
shop remained, offering basic design, printing and copying services. After
Charles and Henry retired, the staff continued, briefly moving the business
