someone you should know

MEET LYNDSEY KEMPER
My name is Lyndsey Kemper.
I’ve lived in Avery Ranch with
my husband, Adam, and son,
Luke since 2009. Adam and I
met in sixth grade. We’ve loved
each other most of our lives.
We got married, and then Luke
came along. We’ve been the
three amigos ever since. Adam
was a deep sea diver, but gave
it up to be home more and
started a mobile detailing company called Southern Touch
Custom Detail. In the meantime, I received my bachelor’s
in nursing from UT Austin and
subsequently went to work at
Brackenridge Hospital. Life
was good. Smooth. Adam and
I sat on the couch one day
talking about how great life
was; how it always felt like
the Higher Power had a hand
in our lives. A foreboding joy
shadowed our conversation as
we said, “Hope we aren’t in for
some crazy twist!”
And what a twist it was.
In 2010, I was diagnosed with
an inoperable brain tumor.
Thank goodness it’s very slow
growing, but the symptoms
have progressed to the point
that I am in constant pain and
unable to maintain an upright
position for long periods of
time. Eventually, the symptoms forced me to quit my
nursing job.
We spent the next few years
consulting the best neurosur-

geons all over the country.
Each one had the same
roundabout answer regarding operating: “Don’t touch
it.” “If someone agrees to
operate, run the other way.”
“You’d flatline on the table.”
“You should pray it’s MS.”
Apparently, these are the answers you get when you have
a brain tumor in the worst
possible place you can have a
brain tumor.
We submitted to the dead end
of a cure from western medicine. Unable to drive, I spend
all day most days cooped inside the house. So, we decided
to make our home as cozy and
inviting as possible. Not wanting some meaningless wall
décor from a store, we began
exploring ways to create our
own art. Creating art became
a welcome distraction from
the symptoms, as well as an
avenue for spending quality
time together.
After making a few, we decided they were actually really
beautiful, unique, and it might
be fun to share them with the
world. This led to the creation
of Lucid Blooms—a place
where people can buy original
art that helps them create
their own inviting space.
While the tumor has demolished many aspects of our life,
in its wake are also blessings.
Deeper, richer relationships.
An expanded appreciation for
the little things. Discoveries
that would have remained
buried otherwise.
This is a story to inspire others to create their own silver
linings. To create beauty from
the ugliness of life. To create
light in spite of the shadows.
