I am proud to be a Shriner!
That’s how Avery Ranch resident Ed Bromstad describes
his 50-year association with
Shriners and his support
for Shriners Hospitals for
Children. Ed became a Shriner
because his father was a Shriner. From a very early age, Ed
grew to appreciate the work
of Shriners and their care for
children. Originally from the
Chicago area, Ed and his wife,
Cheryl, have been residents
of Waters Edge for the past 15
years. After being transferred
to Houston in 1972, they
moved to Waters Edge in 2004
to be closer to their daughter,
her husband, and their children. Their son, his wife, and
family live in Alabama.
Shriners are members of
Shriners International, which
is the fraternity that founded Shriners Hospitals for
Children in 1922. The first
Shriners Hospital was built
in Shreveport, LA. Shriners
Hospitals for Children provide
specialized care to children
with orthopaedic conditions,
burns, spinal cord injuries,
and cleft lip and palate,
regardless of the families’
ability to pay. Generally,
care is provided until age
18, although, in some cases,
it may be extended to age
21. All care and services are
provided in a compassionate,
family-centered environment.
In Texas, we are fortunate to
have two Shriners Hospitals,
one in Galveston that specializes in burns and the other in
Houston that specializes in
orthopaedic conditions, spinal
cord injuries, and cleft lip and
palate. Other Shriners Hospitals for Children are located
throughout the United States,
Canada, and Mexico.
Locally, Ed has served as
Potentate (President) of Ben
Hur Shriners in Austin, which
is one of approximately 200
Shrine Centers internationally. One local way that Ed
works to support Shriners
Hospitals for Children is by
volunteering during IHOP’s
Free Pancake Day. The donations made by patrons at
Austin area IHOP locations
during Free Pancake Day go to
support Shriners Hospitals for
Children. Ben Hur Shriners
also provide for the transportation needs of central Texas
patients who are treated at
Shriners Hospitals.
Shriners are also very active in our
local community. Ben Hur Shriners
sponsor the Shrine Circus at HEB Center and the Carnival at Dell Diamond.
In addition, Ben Hur Shriners participate in numerous parades throughout central Texas with their popular
clowns and motorized vehicles.
On a national level, Ed has served
as a member of the Shriners Sports
Committee. Sporting events around
the country are held to help support
Shriners Hospitals for Children. These
include the East-West Shrine game
in St. Petersburg, FL, the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas,
and the Shriners College Baseball Classic at Minute Maid Park in Houston.
Ed has been particularly involved with
promoting the College Baseball Classic
in Houston by doing PSAs and singing
our National Anthem at games.
Ed’s pride in being a Shriner is even
greater by his knowing that more than
1.3 million children have been treated
Ed & Cheryl volunteering at IHOP

and helped during the nearly 100 years that Shriners
Hospitals for Children has existed. Over the years,
Ed has heard countless testimonials from people who
have either been treated themselves or had family
members treated by Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Every story ends with a heartwarming, “Thank you!”
