Digital Construction – Challenges and Opportunities
Engineering profession mobility has always been seen to be associated
mainly with movement of natural persons (MNP). This thinking,
however, was seriously challenged during the first time the pandemic
came in early 2020 when borders were closed and the usual ways of
doing business could no longer be sustained. As the pandemic dragged
on, many economies had no other recourse but to resume operations of
its industries and businesses, however limited it maybe, if only to keep
the economy afloat. The engineering professions and the professionals,
like many other professions, were not spared.
Thanks to the many enabling technological innovations that were
jumpstarted during the last two years or so. Today mobility has taken
on an enhanced form. Beyond MNP, mobility now involves, and will
invariably continue to involve in the very near future, more virtual service flows across borders, of course,
enabled by these technologies.
To be able to sustain this above mobility trend, however, the continuing development and maintenance of
a critical mass of credible, capable and proven pool of engineering professionals and experts in each of the
ASEAN Member States (AMS) must continually be pursued. It must be noted that the success of mobility
is still underpinned by the mutual recognition of the qualifications of the engineering professionals involved.
This is one of the major purposes and roles of the ASEAN Engineering Register and the ASEAN Chartered
Professional Engineer Register – to assess, evaluate, register and attest to the competence and qualifications
of engineering professionals.
This presentation will discuss about these above perspectives, the challenges and opportunities available to
engineering professionals in the ASEAN.
