Quantity Surveying in Myanmar Construction Industry:
Past, Present, Future.
The evolution of the quantity surveying profession was examined in the
context of the construction industry in Myanmar. Quantity surveying
of prominent construction works before independence were taken care
of by professionals in the public sector, employed or contracted by
successive colonial governments. After independence, it was continued
by professional staff from the Public Work Department which was later
transformed into the Ministry of Construction. The Ministry’s Building
Department deploys five key sections: Architects Section, Structure
Design Section, Quantity Surveying Section, Electrical Section, and
Water Supply and Sanitary Section.
After 1988, private conglomerates started to implement mega
infrastructure projects, but quantity surveying was continued in house
by the Ministry of Construction staff. Myanmar has been an ASEAN member since 1995 and ASEAN
MRAs for mobility of labor demands facilitation of cross-border practice of the regional professionals
including engineers and surveyors. The QS Chapter has been formed under the umbrella of Federation of
Myanmar Engineering Societies and has been working towards the emergence of the quantity surveying
profession in line with international norms, our education system and local practices.
