Foreword by Chief Executive, CIDB Malaysia
It is a great honour and pleasure for me to welcome all participants
to the Inaugural Virtual International Quantity Surveying (QS)
Conference (IVIQSC 2022) with the theme “Collaboration and
Mobility of Quantity Surveying and Allied Professions in the
ASEAN Countries - The Challenges and Way Forward.”
Construction industry is responsible for building the nation’s physical
infrastructure, providing transportation services, housing facilities,
business and various educational and commercial institutions. Over
the past decade, the ASEAN construction industry has contributed
significantly to the economy as an enabler of growth to other
industries.
The cost engineering profession, or quantity surveying (even though
they are two different professions but has highly overlapping
functions) is traditionally understood as the expert advisors on all
aspects of construction cost management, financial management and
contractual administration, whether building, civil or heavy engineering. Hence, quantity surveyors have
to invest in and enhance their work practice in order to remain agile, in tandem with the progression of the
construction industry in the world. In the ASEAN context, our industry professionals must prepare to be on
par with other global players in terms of capacity, components, and capability to enhance the productivity
of our construction industry. These will ensure greater certainty in areas where clients previously faced
performance difficulties and adversarial problems.
Thus, the hosting of the QS IVC 2022 is indeed timely and relevant. I am confident this conference will
serve as an effective platform to discuss best practices, success stories and new collaboration approach to
offer QS practices in ASEAN region. I hope IVIQSC 2022 will facilitate continuous networking for the
sharing of knowledge and expertise as well as to stimulate international cooperation in the QS practices.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic which affected the whole world, this conference need to be held virtually.
Therefore, I would liketo express my gratitude to ASEAN Quantity Surveyors Association (AQSA),
Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM)
in collaboration with professional institutions and professional bodies for their initiative and efforts in
organising this conference.
I wish for the fruitful deliberations from all participants towards achieving the objectives of the IVIQSC 2022.
