GETTING TO KNOW OUR STAFF
MARIA THERESA GARCIA
How has Autism Association (Singapore) supported
you in your career development?
If you were stuck on an island, what three things
would you bring and why?
AA(S) helped me a lot when it comes to my career. I have kind
and very supportive supervisors who have mentored me during
my nine years in Eden Centre for Adults and sent me to various
training to improve my craft.
I will bring a satellite phone so that I can call for help and
communicate with my loved ones. A jungle bolo, so I can protect
myself from wild animals and hunt for food. Last but not least, a
carton of matchsticks so that I can cook my food and set up fire
to keep me warm at night.
How do you deal with your challenges at work?
Each morning, I pray that God will give me the wisdom to overcome
challenges at work, and I try to transform each challenge into
learning. Most importantly, everyone in our team supports and
encourages each other during difficult times.
People would be surprised if they knew…
I was a TV commercial model in my 20’s – for Yakult!
What advice would you give to new colleagues?
Treat our clients as our own family. Give them the care and
patience they need. Realizing that at the end of the day, it’s not
only about how much we will earn monetarily but how much love
and completeness we will earn by being here. Consider it as a
privilege to be used as a tool in transforming lives.

FUND-RAISING & DONATIONS
Baking for Fund!
In July 2020, the Association received kindness from HyerBakes,
a virtual bakeshop started by two young budding entrepreneurs,
Ms Estella Goh and Ms Cleo Tan. HyerBakes made financial
contributions towards the Eden Care Fund. The Fund helps
defray the cost of programme fees and other relevant expenses
for financially disadvantaged clients and students, as well as their
Estella and Cleo strongly believe in the purpose of the Association;
to educate and empower individuals on the autism spectrum,
with the end goal of maximising their potential and allowing
them to become self-supporting with time. Estella and Cleo
organised an online home bake sale, selling chunky cookies and
yummy cheesecakes. Weeks of effort and dedication were put
into mastering their recipes to ensure utmost satisfaction from
their customers. To their pleasant surprise, they received an
overwhelming response via their online platform, and during a 10day sale garnered a handsome profit of $1,032!
Thank you HyerBakes! Your gesture of love has truly warmed
