GETTING TO KNOW OUR STAFF
TAN TONG XIN
INTERVIEW
What do you like most about Autism Association (Singapore)?
I like the people here the most. I am constantly inspired by my colleagues’ passion
for the children and desire to provide intervention of the best quality. I feel
that the management genuinely cares about our professional development and
growth as teachers too. This makes me feel appreciated and well-supported in
this organisation.
What soft skills and knowledge are needed for your position at
the Eden Children’s Centre?
I could write a whole essay about this, but in short, an Early Intervention
Programme teacher needs to have patience, perseverance, communication and
interpersonal skills, organisational skills, observation skills, empathy, creativity and
the ability to remain calm and clear-headed even when a few children are crying
or screaming around you. We also need to know the impact of autism on a child
and understand why they behave the way they do.
What is the most important lesson you have learned when it
comes to your work?
Teaching is a learning journey. There is so much to learn and there will always be
room for improvement. So it is important to keep on enhancing our skills and
knowledge through training, research conferences, books, and constant reflection.
If you could only drink one kind of beverage for the rest of your
life, what would it be and why?
Coke! Because I’m addicted to it. I need to drink at least one can a day.
You’re happiest when…?
Teacher Tong Xin and her (super cute) client Mateen.
I travel to other countries and explore different places.
