• Spiritual: “We have a full-time chaplain on
campus, services and bible study. We also
have a partnership with different churches in
the area and the various ministers, pastors,
priests and clergy visit.”
• Emotional: “One example is that thanks to
a neighbor who owns a horse farm, residents can visit and tend to the horses in the
stables, brush, touch, feed them treats, and
take care of them. It’s very calming. And we
have sound healing sessions with breath
work that encourage physical and emotional
well-being.”
“All in all,” says Haas, “Glen Meadows is
a wonderful place to live. You couldn’t find
a more congenial home in which to age in
place.”
Sterling Care Riverside
Sometimes staying in your home is not
an option when you need additional help to
recover from an illness or surgery. Sterling Care
Riverside, located in Harford County, “provides
short-term inpatient rehab services, skilled
nursing care and long-term care services to
our residents. Aquatic Therapy programs are
offered in our new indoor pool at our beautiful
wellness center. TeleHealth is also provided at
bedside or in a dedicated TeleHealth suite. In
this warm and home-like environment, our
care givers get to know each of our residents
intimately and provide personalized care,”
according to its website.
Akiva Slepoy, executive director at Sterling
Care Riverside, talks about this skilled nursing facility. “Our goal is to get you well and
get you home. Those who stay here usually need additional assistance to regain their
health, and it’s easier to accomplish here than
in their homes. When someone has a joint
replacement, for instance, they may need to
achieve specific therapy goals, so inpatient
rehabilitation is the solution. We can provide
more physical therapy and/or occupational
therapy, and speech-language pathology and
cognition, more rigorous than patients could
do on their own.
“If someone needs skilled nursing, which
may include anything from treatment that
needs IV (intravenous) therapy, injections,
wound care, catheter care, and monitoring
vital signs and medical equipment, we do
that, too.”
Another offering at Sterling Care Riverside is
respite care. For those who care for someone at home, this can be a godsend. Bonnie
Mott’s mother lived with her and her husband.
When they needed to travel to New York
State to visit their children, they couldn’t take
Bonnie’s mother with them. Respite care was
the answer and gave them a much-needed
break. Because Sterling Care Riverside had no
minimum stay requirements, it was easy.
According to the National Institute of Aging
(www.nia.nih.gov/health/what-respite-care),
part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH),
“Respite care provides short-term relief for primary caregivers. It can be arranged for just an
afternoon or for several days or weeks. Care
can be provided at home, in a health care facility, or at an adult day center.” This is usually
something Medicare does not cover.
“We also provide long-term care,” Slepoy
says. “When someone has a stroke, they
may require care for a longer period of time
to recover. We can provide all the different
services and therapies they need. It’s important when someone cannot perform activities
of daily living on their own, that they have a
place to go.”
Most of the patients at Sterling Care
Riverside are referred from hospitals. In addition to medical care, there are daily activities
and exercises well attended by all the residents as it helps pass the time by participating.
For the time they are at Sterling Care, it is their
home, so these provide structure to their days,
stimulates them, and keeps them active. They
also look forward to days when they celebrate
a birthday or when special foods – like Taco
Tuesday, the ice cream social, grilled cheese
sandwiches, or hot chocolate and cookies –
are provided.
“These are a break from the regular meals
and one of their remaining pleasures,” says
Slepoy, “so they love it when those events
come around. Another treat is Bingo or when
we have a hired performer, about once a
month.”
When someone needs special care or
special attention, be it short-term or longer,
Sterling Care Riverside has all the services
they need along with lots of amenities and
recreational activities. They’ll get the best care
in a warm environment from people who strive
to make their stay as comfortable as possible.
