According to the State of Maryland
website, the Department of Defense
employs more than 400,000 workers in
Maryland with over $20 billion in total
wages. With several installations in the
state, the military industry generates more
than $57 billion and constitutes 17% of
Maryland’s total output.

Joint Base Andrews
Andrews Air Force Base and the Naval
Air Facility Washington officially became
known as Joint Base Andrews on Oct. 1,
2009. Camp Springs Army Air Field, as it
was originally called, became operational
on May 2, 1943. The field’s early mission
was to train fighter pilots for overseas
combat duty. It became Andrews Field
in 1945 to honor of one of the Air Force’s
founding fathers, Lt. Gen. Frank M.
