return for an entrance fee and a monthly
fee for the duration of the program, members will be covered by a comprehensive package of services designed to
support independence and provide safe
and comfortable conditions to remain at
home even as care needs increase. The
fees may qualify for a federal income tax
deduction for prepaid medical expense,
so you should consult your tax advisor”
In other words, once you become a
member, The Wesley at Home includes
a daily lifetime long term care benefit
payment (currently up to $350 per day
depending on what plan contract you
select) once you have a substantial deficit
of at least two Activities of Daily Living or
severe cognitive impairment. This can be
paired with LTCI if you have it.
When you contact The Wesley at
Home, an initial medical, functional, insurance and financial screening of applicants
for eligibility is required. Members enter
when they are functionally well. Once
accepted, you’ll be assigned a Care Plan
Coordinator who will meet with you quarterly and oversee provision of services.
Together, you’ll draft an individualized
Care Plan based on your preferences.
An occupational therapist will complete a
home inspection to ensure your residence
is safe and functional. You’ll also get a
24-hour emergency response system in
case of a medical, physical, emotional or
environmental emergency and five free
annual calls to a nurse for telehealth services.
An extra benefit is that members will
be enrolled in the Maryland Department of
Aging’s Community for Life Program. That
provides transportation support, handyman services and home maintenance, a
health and wellness concierge, membership in the health and wellness center, and
other services to help you remain mentally
and physically active as you age safely at
home.
When the time comes, defined as
needing assistance with at least two of
the six Activities of Daily Living (bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, transferring
and continence) or cognitive impairment,
you’ll receive homemaker services (light
chores), companion services (visiting or
social interactions), licensed nursing care,
adult day care, and/or paid caregivers.
If a family member takes on the role of
caregiver, she or he could also be trained
and paid. This all takes place in your residence. You aren’t required to enter a facility, but the program covers assisted living,
memory care and skilled nursing through
participating providers if that level of care
and service is needed.
“What sets us apart from other options
available,” says Young, “is that we provide
the care aspect of aging. I’ve seen people
enroll in the plan and they know we’ll take
care of them. The care coordinator is there
for them to oversee all the arrangements.
It’s peace of mind when something goes
wrong with your health. Most importantly,
we personalize your health care, and it
takes place in your home.”
Over the last few years, and more so
since the pandemic began, it has become
more difficult to find competent staff for
home care. A lot of nursing homes are
closing, so if you need care over the next
ten years, The Wesley at Home is going to
do the heavy lifting.
“You won’t need to find a place if your
health declines,” Young adds. “Even better, you will now have a plan. We work in
tandem with long term care insurance, so
if you have it, great. But that’s only money,
not actual care. I’ve met with many people
and seen the options. One person was
paying $20,000 a year for LTCI. Many
insurance companies are now offering
buyouts for their LTCI. Some people are
taking the offer and using it to buy into the
CCAH program.”
Should you involve your children? It’s
your choice. Many adults don’t want to
become a burden to their children or move
into their homes. If you elect to move to be
closer to your kids, you can, and then your
plan goes with you.
More than anything else, The Wesley’s
continuing care at home becomes your
partner for a positive future. It is your partner to help you remain healthy, to remain
mentally involved, to stay active and part
of your community, and to be there when
you need assistance. All in all, it’s an easy
choice to make.
