Finding joy
Ryan Conaway Jr., 7, is all smiles as his dad, Ryan Conaway Sr., push him on a swing. Fun times are had at the Maryland Corn Maze in

Some of my favorite images are the ones that
capture joy. The joy of victory, a special moment,
or people celebrating. Sharing happy moments in
our community is what makes photojournalism so
special. These moments are the images people cut
out of the paper and hang on their refrigerators.
On this day, the sun was shining and the
weather was beautiful — a perfect fall day. I went

Ryan Jr., 7, and his sister Ramir, 4, being pushed on
a swing by their dad, Ryan Sr., with mom, Renita
Martin at his side. They were all smiles.
I set up my camera and began shooting
pictures. When I saw the above frame I knew I
had something special: joy. The glee on this family’s faces filled me with equal excitement. I knew
I had captured the moment.
I like to think I brought that same joy to the
family the following day seeing the image on the
front page of The Capital newspaper. I imagine it
hanging on their refrigerator to this day.
