Library and Museum there. The museum
holds an incredible collection of sporting
art: fox hunting, bird dogs and fishing.
The library contains books on the same

Maryland: After fighting the traffic
in the Washington, D.C., area, it was a
pleasure to cross the Chesapeake Bay
Bridge and glide down to the Eastern
Shore. Like Virginia, I had visited here
many times before, so didn’t stop at my
favorite places in St. Michaels, Oxford
or Cambridge, but pushed on to Ocean
City, and the end of the journey.
I celebrated with a good lunch at
Shenanagan’s and a long walk on the
boardwalk. It was an extremely hot day,
so the beach and the boardwalk were
not crowded, but I was not inclined to
linger in the heat.
Would I do it again? Yes, but only if
I could spend more time in each place.
There is so much to see and do in
every state it was a shame to have to
rush through. For example, I had been
looking forward to visiting the Harriet
Tubman Museum and Educational
Center in Cambridge, Maryland, but
the day I was in that area it was closed.
Because of my schedule, I couldn’t wait
a day or two for it to open.
Plan your trip around your interests.
I love history and the outdoors, so I
visited historic sites and parks where I
could do some hiking. My lifelong love
of horses was indulged at the National
Sporting Library and Museum in Virginia.
Traveling one of America’s highways
may not be as fast as traveling on the
interstate, but it takes you through the
heart of America. Although I did it west
to east, it can obviously be done in
the opposite direction as well, or done
in sections at different times of year.
Because of my schedule, my trip was in
July, which was hot everywhere. Spring
or fall would have been a better choice.
