Shopping Services:
As some seniors try to avoid large public spaces
like grocery stores, some scammers are offering
to shop for them. But instead of helping, they
take the cash and never return with the food or
medicine needed.
Stimulus/CARES Act Related Scams:
In these scams, fraudsters ask consumers
to provide bank account information so that
stimulus payments can be “released” to them,
or loan applications can be approved.
Fake Contact Tracers:
Contact tracing scams appear in the form
of text messages or telephone calls seeking
money; Social Security, bank account, or credit
card numbers; and other sensitive information
not required for authentic contact tracing. Real
contact tracers only ask for the names and
phone numbers of the people with whom an
infected person has come into close contact.
Some scammers offer fake contact tracing jobs
in exchange for fees or Social Security numbers.
Government Impersonators:
Fraudsters may impersonate the Social Security
Administration (SSA), Internal Revenue Service
(IRS) or other agencies. The SSA warns about
a scam in which SSA impersonators claim
that benefit payments may be suspended or
decreased due to pandemic-related office
closures. Scammers tell potential victims that
by making a special payment, regular benefit
payments can be maintained. The IRS has
issued similar warnings about corona virus
scams related to overdue tax payments or fees
for filing extensions.
Fake Investment Opportunities:
Some criminals are offering opportunities to
invest early in companies working on a vaccine
for the disease, promising that the “company”
will dramatically increase in value as a result.
These promotions are often styled as “research
reports” and make predictions of a specific
“target price.”
Fake Charities or Relief Organizations:
Do your homework when it comes to donations.
Never donate in cash, by gift card or by wiring
money.
