All of us want to stay safe and protect the ones we love. That may
mean limiting in-person contact with loved ones, particularly
older adults who are especially vulnerable to illness related to
the corona virus. When you have contact with older adults in
your family or community, whether it be in-person, on-line or
by phone, here are some useful tips that you can use to help
ensure their safety.
Safety in the home
“Aging in place” is a term we hear frequently. Most people want
to age safely in their home for as long as possible. Below is
checklist of things to look out for and to discuss with an older
adult who is aging in place:
• Does the older adult need assistance with chores or
housekeeping, bathing, dressing, shopping and meal
preparation, managing money, transportation, or
medications?
• Does the older adult feel isolated? How often do they
socialize with others?
• Is the older adult dependent on another for care? Does
that caregiver have the appropriate skills and support for
this role? Does the caregiver understand the older adult’s
medical conditions?
