Traditions from page 6
Whether your taste is quietly elegant or big-balloon
flaunting, outdoor decorating can be a tried-and-true
tradition. If your new home is in a restricted community
with a homeowner’s association, check the community
by-laws on outdoor decorating guidelines. Are lights
required to be a certain color or type? Are blow-up
decorations like a giant Santa Claus or Frosty the
Greg Pizzuto, executive director of Visit Harford!,
says there are plenty of activities during the holiday
season to spark a tradition for new movers to the
area. “I would highly recommend looking into the three
municipalities’ parades – Bel Air, Havre de Grace and
Aberdeen,” Pizzuto suggests.
In addition, Pizzuto recommends joining in on
a relatively new tradition within the last three years,
Winter Wonderland in Bel Air. The activity is held in
downtown Bel Air from Thanksgiving through the end
of December and offers sleigh rides and carriage rides
among the charming light displays of Bel Air. Pizzuto
also references drive-through light displays, where
drivers can get the full impact of giant light shows set
to holiday music. Churches, businesses and neighborhoods plan the light extravaganzas, so keep an eye on
community websites for dates.
Bezek shares her favorite outings: Living Nativity
scene at CrossRoads Community Church in Bel Air,
and the performance of the Nutcracker at Harford
Community College. “These are beautiful traditions of
the season that everyone can enjoy,” she says.
Ricci-Ehrhardt suggests supporting local businesses when holiday shopping. “Start a tradition of
buying sustainable gifts or something from a small local
shop. These are gifts that are thoughtful and special
to both the giver and receiver,” she says. She recommends adding a light source like a lantern to the gift as
a symbol of sharing the light of the season.
If your home is new, you may think your forrmer
decorations may not be suitable or usable. Be creaative!
For example, garland that encircled the staircase in a
two-story home has nowhere to go in a new one-llevel
home with no stairs. Consider hanging garland onn the
mantle or drape it around a doorway instead. Or,, cut
into smaller pieces that fill baskets or lanterns. This
year’s decorating trends toward more “green” ittems
and more natural looking décor, such as neuttrals,
whites and lots of sparkle, according to Ricci-Ehrhaardt.
The traditional baking of the Christmas coookmany
ies starts even earlier than Thanksgiving in m
households. In a new home, you may worry aboutt the
temperature of the oven, the counter space necesssary
to roll the dough, the space available in your freeezer
to keep the goodies until the holidays. A few wayys to
overcome these obstacles:
• Buy a simple thermometer to put in the oven too
make sure it is at the correct temperature.
• Know how long it takes to pre-heat and how many
trays it can accommodate.
• Make a few “practice” batches well before the
official cookie-making day.
• Plan your packaging or serving style to optimizee
both the taste and beauty of the cookie.
Go to parties when invited! Bezek says people come
single or with spouses or guests to the Newcom
holiday parties. “This is a great way to meet people and
keep the spirit of the holidays,” she says. “Memberrship
is open to anyone, not just newcomers. Your time iss not
limited to being a newcomer. People stay in the clubb for
many years, because, after all, these are your friends.”
