and development. “Your independent living apartment includes housekeeping,
a security fee, weekly activities, utilities,
and one meal a day. We discussed adding a meal plan, but the residents didn’t
want it. And since each apartment has
a full kitchen, they can prepare whatever
they’d like.”
“Just as our board is actively involved
in our community, so are our residents,”
adds Barry Eisenberg, Pickersgill’s executive director. “We’re a small, tightly knit
group with a strong sense of community.
We get to know friends and families of our
residents – actually know them by name
– and that’s the driving force for people
to choose to live here. And we truly offer
independent living. For instance, you use
your own doctor, and you choose what
level of services you’d like.”
If you need to escalate care,
Pickersgill’s assisted living suites have
kitchenettes and include three meals
every day, laundry, medication management, access to nursing, and a wearable
device. If someone should fall or if they’re
in distress, they can get to them quickly.
Pickersgill also has door devices installed
so they can check on residents every day.
“We have an active residents’ association,” says Eisenberg, “and they check
up on each other. They perpetuate the
sense of caring that has been part of
Pickersgill’s mission since its inception. It
is so nice to be part of this community.”
Lutheran Village at Miller’s Grant
Less than 10 minutes from Historic
Ellicott City and a half hour from Baltimore,
Lutheran Village at Miller’s Grant is a
Lutheran Social Ministries of Maryland
community and sister community to
Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster.
Although under the umbrella of the
Lutheran Social Ministries of Maryland,
LVMG has, according to Donna Snyder,
director of sales and marketing, “people
from all faiths and non-faiths.”
The growing community is expanding. The expansion project will add 43
independent living apartments, additional
assisted living suites and skilled nursing
beds, a new memory care neighborhood,
a performing arts center/chapel, movie
theater, new meeting space and a new
on-site restaurant that features an outdoor kitchen, patio space and a pergola
– making the new restaurant one of four
different on-site restaurants, each with
different menus.
“As we break ground on this expansion,” says Snyder, it will be our final addition. We expect completion in mid-2025
or early 2026.”
Snyder discussed the benefits of
senior living residences like LVMG. “By
the time older adults reach age 75, they
need to know where they’re going to go
when they reach their early to mid-80s.
They need a plan and to be ready both
financially and emotionally. Too many
people wait too long. It’s better to be five
years early than five minutes too late.”
One benefit LVMG offers is its Premiere
Waitlist Club. When interested individuals
tour the community and decide it is the
perfect place to retire, they can join. They
are invited to community events, have
access to the fitness center and may
enjoy its on-site restaurants. The Premiere
Waitlist Club permits them to be part of
the community and to start making friends
early so when they move into LVMG,
they’re already part of the community.
Another perk is the Community Table
at meals where anyone is welcome to sit.
If residents don’t have a partner to share
their meal, or just want company, there’s a
seat just for them at the Community Table.
Snyder points out another reason for
LVMG’s popularity. “It’s impossible to be
alone here, in a positive way. Because
isolation is a major threat to older adults’
mental health, our residents make sure
everyone is included. Caring for others
keeps us all healthy.”
