NO.3 Harford Mutual Insurance
At Harford Mutual Insurance Group in Bel Air,
the word “mutual” in its name truly has meaning.
The company’s tagline is “Insuring Opportunity
through Mutual Success” — something the leadership says is a daily goal for its 180 employees.
“Harford Mutual was founded on the principles of mutuality, and that mutual mentality is
at our core,” said Stacey Rebbert, the company’s
assistant vice president of marketing and corporate communications. “We act as one team,
holding ourselves accountable to one another,
working collaboratively, respecting our diversity
and conducting ourselves with integrity.”
The roots of the property and casualty insurer,
founded in 1842, run deep in Maryland.
“We are a mutual organization dedicated to the
well-being of our team members, policyholders,
agency partners and the communities where we
live and work,” Rebbert said.
This is illustrated in part through the team’s
dedication to Harford County, as well as communities across nine states and Washington, D.C.,
where it does business. For instance, its Gives
Back program partners with more than 70 local
and national charitable organizations, providing

volunteer and financial assistance. The company’s charitable giving — more than $625,000 last
year alone — supports organizations focused on
health and human services through poverty alleviation, equity and inclusion, community health
and safety.
“We also offer lunch-and-learn workshops
with our community partners to our employees,”
said Emily Cavey, a marketing communications
specialist.
Harford Mutual has formed several employee-led committees to maintain a robust internal
culture. The Spirit Committee plans multiple
events throughout the year, including hikes,
virtual cooking contests and employee fitness
challenges.
The Inclusion, Diversity and Opportunity
Committee, formed in 2020, has a mission to
create meaningful change through self-examination in the areas of inclusion and diversity.
Meanwhile, the company’s Innovation Chamber focuses on implementing new ideas that
improve products, processes, services or business
models and enable the organization to remain
successful.
Executives said Harford Mutual’s culture
is “unlike any other” in the industry, helping
employees to thrive, no matter their gender, race,
sexual orientation, religion or age.
The company offers educational assistance
for training, professional programs and college
degrees, plus flexible schedules, paid and unpaid
volunteer hours, free mental wellness assistance,
and parental leave.
Throughout the year, the company marks
service milestones with an annual employee
appreciation celebration and a Thanksgiving
breakfast.
Amid the pandemic, the company’s annual
holiday gathering had to be re-imagined. Leadership decided not to cancel the event but instead
hosted a special dinner pickup at Maryland Golf
& Country Clubs in Bel Air.
“Senior leadership donned elf and reindeer costumes and loaded employee cars with
complete family dinners as they drove through
the parking lot,” Rebbert said. “This gave everyone the opportunity to stay connected and ended
up being a great way to say thank you to our hardworking employees.”
