Dr. Christian Boso, current Salisbury University adjunct nursing professor, is from Ghana.
natural world.
The active system waters itself, with an active
duct system pulling air through the plant roots which
acts as a super-filter in the soil. “The green wall multiplies the toxin air-filtering strength of the plants by
200 times,” he explains.
Bruce E. Jarrell, M.D., FACS, UMB president,
had a hand in creating the wall. The ornate metalwork bordering the green wall was completed
by Jarrell, an accomplished metalworker. Together
with his daughter, a graduate of the University of
Maryland School of Nursing, they worked with old
pieces of Baltimore ironwork to create the frame
around the green wall. It is their handiwork that
enhances the beauty of the green wall.
Jane M. Kirschling, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN, the
Bill and Joanne Conway Dean of the University
of Maryland School of Nursing, appreciates the
contribution of the green wall to student wellness.
“The green wall truly brings the outside world into
the building,” she says. “Our students can enjoy the
clean, environmental benefits of the wall while they
gather or study.”
Partnerships between two separate counties and
cultures bring a global perspective to health care.
Salisbury University’s school of nursing has partnered with the school of nursing and midwifery
at the University of Cape Coast, Ghana (UCC),
to ensure their graduates are the most diversely
educated nurses entering the workforce. Salisbury
University has the privilege of hosting Dr. Christian
M. Boso from UCC during his Fulbright ScholarIn-Residence for the 2022-2023 academic year. Dr.
Boso has over 19 years of experience whose areas of
specialization include nursing education, accident
and emergency care, and adult health nursing.
Dr. Boso teaches three undergraduate courses at Salisbury University: introduction to global
health, community health nursing: a rural perspective, and global seminar in interdisciplinary health
and human services. Global seminar is a short-term
study abroad course, with eight students traveling to
UCC in Ghana in January of 2023. While in Ghana,
the students receive an introduction to working with
an interprofessional team to address the country’s
social and health problems.
Dr. Boso values the role of gaining a greater
understanding of another culture can have to broaden horizons. Through his teachings and leading the
study abroad course, students get the opportunity to
understand differences in health care and culture,
which can help them appreciate those differences
and provide a global perspective.
“Everybody talks about becoming a global citizen,” he says. “it’s important to understand the
importance of different cultures when it comes
to health. Nurses must understand different background and cultural thinking to recognize challenges
and differences in obtaining treatment.”
Andrea Lichas ’22 of Saint James, New York is
a student of Dr. Boso’s community health course.
She notes the course has allowed for an exchange of
perspectives and the opportunity to broaden understanding of different cultures and what that means
for health care.
“I’ve really enjoyed being able to understand
the different aspects of community health, to consider the differences within communities and their
resources and how that translates to their health
care,” she explains. “As a nurse, we see patients from
many different cultural backgrounds and see how
culture can affect attitudes towards health care.”
