Association CEO Index 2024
Reasons for joining the sector
CEOs are attracted to roles in the association sector by a sense of
purpose and alignment with their personal values.
The association sector offers a unique career path,
and while 45% of respondents say they fell into the
sector knowing little about it, 55% of say they
proactively chose to join the association sector.
Volunteer engagement
Interestingly, the path to leadership in the association
sector often began with involvement as members or
volunteers.
Those CEOs who proactively chose to work in an
industry or professional association were attracted to
the sector for a variety of reasons.
Many CEOs transitioned from volunteer roles to
executive positions, saying they “had worked on the
Board as a volunteer for many years” or were “a
member of the association before I became the CEO.”
Passion and value alignment
Many were drawn by a passion for the industries or
causes their organisations represent. These leaders
were motivated by a desire to work in fields that align
with their personal experience or values, offering them
the opportunity to contribute to something meaningful,
such as raising industry standards, supporting
education, or advancing health outcomes.
Several respondents indicated they had “worked in the
industry prior to the association” or that they were
attracted to the sector as it provided a unique platform
to “apply their skills beyond profit-driven motives and
focus on creating value for others.”
Career progression
Professional development and the diverse and
dynamic responsibilities of an association CEO
attracted those seeking a multifaceted and fulfilling
career.
This firsthand experience often deepened their
understanding of the sector, leading to a natural
progression into leadership.
For-purpose impact
Finally, the not-for-profit and for-purpose nature of the
sector was a major drawcard for other executives.
Several CEOs mentioned they were first attracted to
the association sector because they “had always
wanted to work for an NFP” or were “attracted to the
not-for-profit sector.”
The chance to work in an environment focused on
mission-driven outcomes, influence policy, advocate
for industry interests, and drive change at a broader
level also resonated with those who wanted to make a
tangible difference. In the words of one executive, the
sector provided an opportunity to work in a sector that
offered the “chance to shape government policy
without joining a political party.”
For many CEOs, their initial role in the sector
represented a pivotal career step, giving them “a
chance to use my industry knowledge and grow as a
business leader“ or “gain experience in advocacy.“
I was attracted to the association sector
by the opportunity to contribute to an
organisation that primarily benefits a
specific community. It appealed to me as
a way to apply my skills beyond profitdriven motives, instead of focusing
on creating value for others.
