Career satisfaction index
There is high satisfaction among CEOs of Australian and New Zealand
associations, with nearly nine in ten leaders satisfied with their role.
The 2024 Association CEO Index reveals a high
overall satisfaction rate among Australian and New
Zealand association executives, with 89% of
respondents expressing satisfaction with their roles.
Overall, 41% say they are satisfied, with 48%
extremely satisfied.
and sufficient authority to perform their roles (92%).
CEOs leading larger associations with over 5,000
members are particularly positive, with 100% of them
agreeing their roles provide purpose and enable
them to make a difference, higher than other
segments.
Directionally, CEOs of hybrid associations, which
represent both individual and organisational
members, report the highest satisfaction at 90%,
while industry body CEOs are slightly less satisfied at
86%.
Support from boards and opportunities for
professional development show more variability.
CEOs in smaller associations (0-1000 members)
report lower levels of support from their boards
(79%) and professional development opportunities
(59%). Notably, those with 11-20 years of experience
report higher satisfaction with support from their
boards (91%) compared to those newer to the sector.
Satisfaction is also higher among CEOs of
associations with over 5,000 members and those
with between 11 and 20 staff, four in five of whom
say they are extremely satisfied.
Gender, age and experience related differences are
minimal, though male CEOs show slightly lower
satisfaction than their female counterparts.
Again, age and gender differences are minimal,
although male CEOs are slightly more likely than their
female counterparts to feel empowered (96% vs.
89%) and supported by their boards (85% vs. 80%).
Underlying this high satisfaction, the majority of
CEOs report feeling a strong sense of purpose (93%)
