Career intentions
The majority of CEOs plan to remain in their roles for the next 3-5 years,
but uncertainty about long-term career plans is prevalent.
Role Intentions
Nearly half (46%) of CEOs of Australian and New
Zealand industry and professional associations plan to
stay in their current role for the next 3-5 years, while
24% expect to move on within 1-2 years. A notable 12%
are actively seeking new opportunities now.

Among those looking to leave their existing role within
the next three years, while 38% plan to stay in the
association sector for at least the next five years an
equal proportion are unsure about their future.

While a small percentage (7%) are eyeing a move to the
private sector, no respondents expressed interest in
moving into government, charity/NGO, or political roles.
Nearly one in five (18%) are considering retirement.
Less than a quarter of associations have a succession
plan to replace their current CEO. This is significantly
more common among large associations with over
5,000 members (60%).
