Association CEO Index 2024
Barriers to talent attraction
Salary concerns, lack of visibility, and resource limitations are key
barriers to attracting emerging leaders to the association sector.
Only three in ten association CEOs believe that
emerging leaders see the role of managing an
association as an attractive career choice.
Association CEOs believe that the most significant
barriers to attracting emerging leaders are
concerns about salary and remuneration (62%) and
the low visibility of associations as a rewarding
career path (62%).
Lack of resources are also seen as a barrier to
attracting talent. Over two in five believe having to
work with low budgets (44%) and lack of resources
(43%) reduce the attractiveness of the sector.
The perception that the sector offers limited career
growth opportunities is also a hindrance, making it
difficult to attract emerging talent to the role of
managing an association. Young leaders under 30
are even more concerned about salary (74%) and
visibility (72%), highlighting the difficulty in
appealing to this demographic. In contrast, those
aged over 60 are more focused on the lack of
career growth opportunities (41%) suggesting that
more experienced leaders see long-term career
sustainability as a bigger issue.
