Q. In your opinion, what would enhance
the association sector as a rewarding
and worthwhile career option?
Promote the sector to increase visibility
The most frequently mentioned approach is
improving visibility and recognition of the sector’s
impact. This includes promoting the depth of
experience association managers gain, highlighting
successful association leaders, and showcasing the
sector’s contributions to industries and communities.
These respondents suggest using case studies, PR
campaigns, and targeted communications to raise
awareness among universities, government, and the
wider public.
“Promotion of the job satisfaction that comes with
working for associations. Promotion to the private
sector as an alternate career path.” (Industry
Association CEO)
Increase remuneration and benefits
Respondents also suggested there is a need for
better remuneration and competitive salary packages
to attract and retain talent in the sector. There were
many comments that while association careers are
rewarding, they generally don't pay as well as the
private sector and there is a need to increase
remuneration offerings to be competitive.
"Higher salaries. Small associations pay nowhere near
market rates for their staff." (Professional Association
CEO)
Education about the value provided by the sector
To enhance the attractiveness of the association
sector as a career path, some respondents also
suggested communicating the unique value of
working in the association sector, particularly in
comparison to other sectors like the private sector.
They note that the sector should be promoted as a
viable and fulfilling career option, especially for those
driven by purpose and a desire to make a difference.
Develop education and career pathways
Alongside this, offering clear career pathways,
professional development opportunities, and relevant
qualifications are also suggested as important.
Promotion of specific association qualifications were
suggested by several CEOs, while others suggested
improving the narrative around the sector’s
importance and creating recognition of the potential
for career longevity across different organisations
within the sector.
"Understanding the value of what associations do, they
are not just membership administrators, their advocacy,
their work for their specific industries, etc."
“Career pathways and qualifications including microcredentials and specialist skills, e.g., advocacy,
conference management." (Industry Association CEO)
