Managing an association
The role of an association CEO is multifaceted, with a strong focus on
managing the range of activities crucial to the organisation's success.
Administrative, finance, and HR responsibilities occupy
a significant portion of the time of association CEOs,
ensuring that operations are efficient and financially
stable. Governance and strategic oversight are also
key, with substantial attention given to board matters.
Membership management is also a central function and
88% of association CEOs report that they are strongly
focused on the issues facing their members. CEOs
dedicate just over 10% of their time to member
retention, reflecting its importance for financial
sustainability and influence. Of interest, less time is
spent on attracting new members, perhaps indicating a
strategic emphasis on strengthening relationships with
current members.
Advocacy is another crucial area, particularly in
industry associations where CEOs dedicate a
considerable amount of time to influencing government
policy and regulations. Despite this, only 63% of CEOs
rate their effectiveness in government advocacy as
strong, and building strong government contacts
remains a challenge for many.
Innovation is recognised as important. Positively, many
CEOs believe their associations have the skills and
knowledge to innovate. There is also a general sense
among CEOs that their associations are forwardthinking, with 73% believing they are well-positioned to
meet future needs of their members and their industry.
