Advocacy effectiveness index
While most association CEOs report strong relationships with media and
stakeholder groups, many recognise a need for a stronger greater policy
influence.
Overall, 83% of associations report having good
relationships with key stakeholders. Of these 36%
strongly agree their relationships with stakeholders
such as corporate partners, unions and associated
members are good. Nine in ten CEOs of the largest
associations (those with over 5,000 members) self
report strong relationships with these important
groups.
Similarly, only 50% of associations report effectively
raising the profile of the profession or industry they
represent with the public, although this increases to
80% of larger associations with over 5,000
members.
This may be due to the difficulty associations have in
building a public profile - only 36% of CEOs report
they have a strong, visible media presence. This
appears particularly the case for professional
associations, with only 28% saying they have a
strong media presence.
CEOs ratings of their effectiveness in advocating to
governments on behalf of their members are more
muted. Overall, 63% agree they are effective, with
only 23% in strong agreement. Industry associations
appear more effective in government advocacy, with
74% indicating their advocacy efforts on behalf of
members are effective, compared to 58% of
professional associations.
These findings suggest larger, and more resourcerich associations are better equipped to manage
external relationships and influence policy, while
smaller associations may need to focus more on
building these capabilities.
Maintaining strong government contacts to influence
policy also appears more challenging. Only 48% of
association CEOs claim to have strong government
contacts, although this figure is somewhat higher
among industry associations (63%) and those with
annual revenues over $5 million (62%).
