Making Room IN A CRISIS
Pastor Jason Scales
It never ceases to amaze me the conditions under which God can do His best work!
The theme the Lord gave me for this year is “Make Room.” The concept simply
means that we should make space for whatever God wants to do in our lives. Many
times, God wants to move, but there is no room for what He wants to do because our
lives are full of things that are just taking up space.
Making Room could mean purging something out of our lives. It could mean learning
and preparing for something new. It could mean a plethora of things, but essentially
it is preparing for some God things in our lives.
So, I started this year with so much excitement with the idea of making room. My
staff, family members and I began to talk about growth and expansion. We had
plans drawn up for our new facility. We purchased another facility and started a
worship service in Shelbyville, TN. This year got off to an incredible start. Then, out
of nowhere comes COVID-19. I do not think any of us saw this coming. Everything
as we knew it would change regarding church and many other facets of life.
This pandemic has posed many challenges in terms of how we approach life, people,
and gathering, not to mention our finances. I will admit that this pandemic has really
impacted my faith, but in the midst of all of this, the Lord spoke to me that we would
come out better than we were entering into it.
Many people have different takes on COVID-19. Is it a plague? Did God send this as
judgment to the church? My belief is that it is not sent by God. I do believe, however,
that God can use anything for His glory and He is using this to grow us.
This pandemic has pulled on the creativity and innovation of most people and, in
particular, the church. Churches, families, businesses, schools and every field of
human endeavor has had to adjust. As a church, we have had to employ creative
ways to get the gospel out and do what we have been called to do.
This season has been fun and a lot of work. I am so inspired by what I am seeing
around me. I am seeing people change because they have no other choice but to
change. I am seeing technology being used in ways that many didn’t use it before. I
am seeing people get better at what they do and refuse to give up when obstacles
are presented.
God has blessed our church beyond measure in this season. Not only have we had
to become more innovative, but God came through in a major way and we were
blessed with the resources to do so. We were prepared to use what we had, but
God has allowed us to Make Room by blessing us with a complete renovation of our
sanctuary. Specifically, we extended our stage, installed new carpet in the sanctuary,
and received a new camera to record our services. When I say blessed, I mean it did
not cost us a dime! We just had a plan and design for it.
God is amazing! He has proven that nothing will stop Him from Making Room. When
God makes a promise, you can count on it. He is going to fulfill His promises.
