When asked why he started to include a small mouse in his artistic work, Cuneo replied that he
first sketched the wee rascal as a diversion. He had been working on the formal painting of the
Queen's Coronation when his Burmese cat came into the studio, toting a little field mouse; and
although the wee beastie was dead, Cuneo thought the tiny fellow would make a good ‘still life' and
when he showed the inanimate at the ‘Summer Exhibition’ of the Royal Watercolour Society, those
attending loved it and advised the artist to include it in his future paintings. That’s when he decided
to sneak a wee mouse, sometimes realistic, sometimes cartoony, into any of his finished works.
So if you get a chance to view the full portrait of the Ulster Defence Regiment's .. 'The
Search' by Terence Cunio .. have a wee juke to see if you can spot the wee sleekit, timorous
beastie, as supporting back-up for the UDR in that Ulster country lane.
THE PAINTING IS A TRIBUTE TO ALL THOSE SOLDIERS WHO GAVE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE
DURING THE 'TROUBLES' AND THE HUNDREDS MORE INJURED IN THE SAME DEPLOYMENT IN
NORTHERN IRELAND; DO NOT LET THEIR VALOROUS BRAVERY EVER BE FORGOTTEN.
"AT THE GOING DOWN OF THE SUN …."
