DANIEL WAS A MAN OF PRAYER
Looking back to one's early days in Sunday school; something that few kids
nowadays wouldn't even care about, never mind attend, many of us must have
been spirited by some of the wee hymns we sung or the stories we heard back
then. How we all belted out the lines of the biblical
stories waxing lyrical as we joined in those, such as ..
'Romans 10 and 9, is a favourite verse of mine' or that
of our banner headline; 'Daniel was a man of prayer' ..
one of the best loved amongst many kids ..
"Daniel was a man of prayer, daily he prayed three times,
Till one day they cast him down; in a den of lions.
In a den, in a den; fear would not alarm him,
God just (shut) the lions' mouths, so they couldn't harm him"
But what was the story of Daniel and what made him a favourite every Sunday
afternoon, to many a snotty-nosed kid, back in the earlier generations of life and growing
up, during the mid fifties and sixties?
Well, Chapter 6 of his Biblical Book tells the fascinating story of Daniel in the lions' den and
how he was previously raised to high office by his royal master Darius the Mede.
However jealous rivals tricked the king into issuing a decree that on pain of death, prayers
should not be addressed to any god or man, for thirty days, only to Darius himself.
But even so, Daniel continued to faithfully pray to the God of Israel, and although deeply
distressed, by law Darius had no other option but to condemn his friend to death in a lions' den,
as the edicts of the Medes and Persians could not be altered for anyone of whatever status,
even members or associates of the royal household.
Troubled by what he had done, when daybreak came, Darius immediately hurried to the pit, all
the time crying out in the hope that God had saved his friend. Daniel in turn called out that the
Lord had sent an angel to protect him by closing the jaws of the lions, because he had been
found blameless before God.
In responsive anger Darius ordered that those who had conspired against Daniel,
including their families be thrown to the lions in Daniel's place, and in turn commanded
to all the people, of the whole world that they should tremble with fear before the Lord
God of Daniel, the God of Israel .. and our Lord God as well!!
THE HOLY TRUTH OF HOW OUR LORD PROTECTED DANIEL IS CONTAINED WITHIN THE
PROPHESIES OF THE SCRIPTURES BEGINNING AT VERSE ONE, CHAPTER 9; OF THE
BOOK OF DANIEL IN THE KING JAMES VERSION OF THE BIBLE.
In the first year of Darius the son of
Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes which
was made king over the realm of the
Chaldeans;
In the first year of his reign Daniel
understood by books the number of the
years, whereof the word of the Lord came
to Jeremiah the prophet, which he would
accomplish over seventy years in the
desolations of Jerusalem.
And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek
by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and
sackcloth, and ashes:
And I prayed unto the Lord my God, and
made my confession, and said, O Lord, the
great and dreadful God, keeping the
