This last year has put us
on a new engagement
journey altogether; it’s
seen us take part in
shorter, quarterly surveys.
When given the option to increase
the frequency of our surveys from
bi-annually to quarterly we were nervous
that we’d see some survey fatigue,
meaning that people would disengage in
taking part and therefore not have their
say; but equally we were excited that
if we could manage that risk we should
drive more focused and meaningful
initiatives that align with the specific
engagement needs of teams, and we’d be
able to directly see the impact.
Additionally, being the year we’ve come
out of COVID we wanted to be closer
to our people than ever, to understand
how people are feeling, transitioning and
understand how things have changed.
Discussing the options across the
business it was agreed that we simply
cannot go into a year of unknowns
and hybrid ways of working without a
mechanism to bring us closer together
and aid two-way communication, and
ultimately drive improvements.

We saw our highest ever
participation rate of 87%;
that’s phenomenal!
Throughout the surveys we have
maintained our 2* accreditation, which
makes us an outstanding company to
work for. We haven’t quite got back
up to our March 2021 rating of 3*, but
we’re heading in the right direction.
It’s always good to have external
benchmarks; our highest ranking on the
Best Co league tables so far are;
36th
to work for in the UK
14th
to work for in the East of England
10th
Best Large Company
Best Company
Best Technology Company
to work for in the UK
We’re often so caught up in our whirlwinds, that we
sometimes forget to take a step back from time to
time and take a moment to feel proud.
With engagement being a company KPI, the
understanding and appreciation of its importance
has hugely increased all across the business.
Talking about engagement with the Senior
Management Team in the context of a KPI has
certainly given plenty of ‘penny dropping’ moments
where it is soon realised, engagement isn’t about the
rating or ranking – that’s just the measure. It’s the
Why and How that matter most.
