SUSTAINABILITY
STRATEGY
“SUSTAINABILITY IS THE
ABILITY TO EXIST AND
DEVELOP WITHOUT
DEPLETING NATURAL
RESOURCES FOR
THE FUTURE”.
There are many benefits to sustainability,
both short and long-term. Fundamental
though is the realisation that we cannot
continue to function as we do and maintain
our Earth’s ecosystem if more sustainable
choices are not made. If our current way of
living is maintained with no change, the Earth
will be irreparably damaged. Clean air and
non-toxic atmospheric conditions, growth of
resources that can be relied upon, and water
quality and cleanliness, are all benefits of
sustainability.
What are the pillars of Sustainability?
The concept of sustainability is composed
of three pillars:
environment
social
economic
also known more informally as planet, people
and profits. These are in particular relevant to
corporate sustainability, and efforts made by
companies such as CAE.
What are the Primary Goals?
The UN has issued The Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs) as its main aim is
for the successful achievement of a better and
more sustainable future. They address global
challenges to sustainability. The seventeen
goals include sustainable economic growth,
no poverty, zero hunger, clean water and
sanitation, affordable and clean energy, and
responsible consumption and production, and
it’s hoped that they’ll be reached by 2030.
How does Sustainability affect CAE?
The Triple Bottom Line approach is useful
for CAE in a number of ways. Not only is it
ethically important to meet UN standards
of environmental sustainability, it’s also
economical and allows for a stronger
business model. Sustainability will also
enable CAE to maintain and attract people,
customers and the community who are
invested in the goals of sustainability and
share these values.
The Future?
The movement and transformation
towards sustainability will be a growing
priority for businesses. Now is the time for
action and for CAE to lead the movement
towards sustainability in our industry. We
are committed to one day making every
employee and department accountable to
sustainability, and while aspirational, please
consider sustainability in everything that you
do, every day.

Make A Difference
In the time since our previous culture book
was published, I’ve been investigating
how B Corp could assist CAE to meet its
sustainability goals. It quickly became
apparent that B Corp wasn’t going to be the
answer, but part of the longer term goal.
We needed an over-arching comprehensive
strategy where all of CAE’s goodness could
come together.
CAE’s new ‘Make A Difference’ sustainability
strategy delivers on the concept of
sustainability by making it relevant to
everyone who comes into contact with our
organisation in our three areas of Company,
Customers and Community (CAE’s Triple
Bottom Line).
Based on our strategy and operations, for this
financial our team have picked out six of the
SDGs and a number of their concrete targets
in the 2030 Agenda within which our greatest
impact is found. In some areas we have
already started to make an impact, and as we
work towards the strategy we will have the
greatest opportunity to make a difference.
