Lake Chelan is the third
deepest lake in the United
States, and the 25th
deepest in the world. It has
a maximum depth of 1,486
ft (453 m). The lake's
deepest point is 388 ft
(118 m) below sea level.
'Lake Chelan' comes from
the Salish word, 'Tsi-Laan',
which means deep water.
The lake is 50.5 mi (81.3
km) long and is located in
north-central Washington
state, U.S.
For over 200 years there
have been legends told of
a great monster that lives
in the depths of Lake
Chelan! These stories, once
passed around the
campfire before bedtime
by locals, paint a consistent
picture of the beast that
dwells deep in Lake
Chelan. The locals call "the
monster" Tsilly

Lake Chelan was carved
out by multiple cycles of
glaciation over the past
million years. Large
continental ice sheets
moved south into
Washington from Canada.
The repetitive grinding and
plucking of the ice,
thousands of feet thick, cut
deep into the bedrock. The
ice formed wide U-shaped
glacial valleys and left
behind extensive glacial
deposits.
