Alvin Adkins
Haida
Alvin is a member of the Haida nation, a group who inhabits the Queen Charlotte Islands, also known as Haida Gwaii, located
along the northern coast of BC. Beginning his career as an artist in 1971, Alvin has been counseled by distinguished colleagues
such as Dempsey Bob, Freda Diesing, Bill Reid, Robert Davidson and Don Yeomans. Alvin has established himself as a prominent
artist whose style reflects intricacy, experience and quality. Currently he is putting most of his time toward carving jewelry pieces
that are sought-after by many Northwest Coast Native art collectors.
Alvin est membre de la nation haïda, un groupe qui habite les îles de la Reine-Charlotte, également connues sous le nom de
Haida Gwaii, situées le long de la côte nord de la Colombie-Britannique. Commençant sa carrière d’artiste en 1971, Alvin a été
conseillé par des collègues distingués tels que Dempsey Bob, Freda Diesing, Bill Reid, Robert Davidson et Don Yeomans. Alvin
s’est imposé comme un artiste de premier plan dont le style reflète la complexité, l’expérience et la qualité. Actuellement, il
consacre la majeure partie de son temps à la sculpture de bijoux recherchés par de nombreux collectionneurs d’art autochtone

Saimaiyu Akesuk

Saimaiyu Akesuk was born on April 28, 1988 in Iqaluit but she has lived in Cape Dorset her whole life. Her parents are
Lau Akesuk and Olayuk Akesuk who was one of the first Members of the Legislative Assembly in Nunavut. Saimaiyu was
inspired to start drawing by Ningeokuluk Teevee while they were taking a class together at the Nunavut Teaching Education
Program. Saimaiyu’s confident drawings of birds and bears are characterized by her bold and dynamic simplicity rendered
with soft tenderness and quite often a touch of whimsy.
Saimaiyu Akesuk est née le 28 Avril 1988 à Iqaluit, mais elle a vécu à Cape Dorset toute sa vie. Ses parents sont Lau Akesuk
et Olayuk Akesuk, qui était l’un des premiers membres de l’Assemblée législative du Nunavut. Saimaiyu a été inspirée par le
dessin grâce à Ningeokuluk Teevee alors qu’ils prenaient une classe ensemble au programme d’éducation d’enseignement du
Nunavut. Les dessins notoires de Saimaiyu d’oiseaux et d’ours se caractérisent par sa simplicité audacieuse et dynamique
rendue avec une douce tendresse et très souvent une touche de fantaisie.
Arnaqu Ashevak
Inuit
Arnaquq is an adopted son of the noted artists Kenojuak Ashevak and Johnniebo Ashevak. He began carving in the early
1980s. In 1990, he started working as an assistant printmaker for the West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative, which inspired
him to make the drawings that led to recognition as a graphic artist. He is more widely known as a carver and enjoys
making fanciful constructions that use a variety of materials. He first exhibited as a printmaker in 1982, and as a sculptor
two years later.
Arnaquq est le fils adoptif des artistes de renom Kenojuak Ashevak et Johnniebo Ashevak. Il a commencé à sculpter au début
des années 1980. En 1990, il a commencé à travailler en tant qu’assistant graveur pour la West Baffin Eskimo Co-operative, ce
qui l’a inspiré à réaliser les dessins qui ont conduit à sa reconnaissance en tant qu’artiste graphique. Il est plus connu en tant
que sculpteur et aime fabriquer des constructions fantaisistes utilisant une variété de matériaux. Il expose pour la première
fois en tant que graveur en 1982 et en tant que sculpteur deux ans plus tard.
