Air Canada celebrates Earth Day by
buying 9.5 mn lts SAF
A
ir Canada made a purchase
of 9.5 million litres of
sustainable aviation fuel
(SAF) to mark Earth Day while
adopting a multifaceted approach
to addressing climate change and
sustainability.
The Canadian flag carrier will
continue this initiative in its Climate
Action Plan by strengthening its
partnership with its long-term SAF
producer, Neste, to power flights
from San Francisco International
Airport. The 9.5 million litres of
SAF will generate GHG reductions
of approximately 23,500 tonnes of
CO2e calculated based on a full
life cycle assessment. The 23,500
tonnes of CO2e are equivalent to the
annual GHG emissions absorbed
by 28,000 acres of forest as per
the US Environmental Protection
Agency equivalencies calculator.
Air Canada says it looks
forward to working with the
Government of Canada to
advance the availability and
generate a meaningful supply
of Canada-produced SAF for commercial aviation which would
also support Canada's position
on climate change, the country's
environment goals, as well as
the Canadian aviation industry
which is an important economic
contributor.
DHL Express to buy 9 Boeing 777-200
reconstructed for carrying cargo
D
HL Express has
ordered 9 Boeing
777-200LR freighters
from Jetran Texas-based lessor
and reseller of used aircraft
that will be converted to dedicated cargo jets by start-up
engineering firm Mammoth
Freighter.
Reportedly, the first cargo
aircraft will be delivered in 2024
with the remaining aircraft to
be supplied until early 2027. The
agreement is part of the overall
sustainability priority to modernise DHL Express’s long-haul
intercontinental fleet including
the replacement of older planes
like the Boeing 747-400s that DHL
is hiring from other companies,
including Kalitta.
DHL has stated that these
airliners will be an ideal fit with
the airline's current and future
operations and will join its fleet
of long-haul intercontinental
aircraft.
The Mammoth converted
B777-200LR freighter promises similar characteristics
and benefits as the production
freighter and is an ideal fit for
DHL. With a payload capacity
of 102 tonnes and a range of
9,200 kilometres, the B777F has
the largest capacity and range of
all twin-engine freighter aircraft
and is more reliable than older
B747 planes. It is also more
fuel-efficient and reduces CO2
emissions by 18% compared to
legacy airplanes.
