PHARMA SUPPLY CHAIN
Packaging concerns all activities
of a company: from the purchasing
of raw materials to the production
and sale of finished products, and
transport and distribution. All
products moved are contained in
packages and for this reason the
analysis of the physical logistics flows
and the role of packaging is a very
important issue for the definition and
design of manufacturing processes,
improvement of layout and increase
in companies’ efficiency. It is
necessary to analyse the packages’
characteristics (e.g. shape, materials,
transport, etc.) in order to improve
the performance of companies and
minimise their costs. In an impromptu
dialogue, Prabir K Das, an alumnus
of Indian Institute of Packaging
(IIP) Mumbai explains Ajeet Kumar, about
the growing relevance of product
packaging systems in the supply chain
because of the necessity to minimise
costs, reduce the environmental
impact, and also due to the
development of e-retail operations.
"Packaging is central to ensure
the effectiveness of the actual
physical distribution of a product"
hat are the challenges
encountered during the
recent pandemic situation?
During normal situation, we
get all our necessities (both essentials and non-essentials) in
time without experiencing any

smoothly works at the background to ensure no one feels
the scarcity of any item which
is in regular use. But we all
have experienced during the
recent constrained conditions
how critical it became to get
even the essentials on time.
This primarily happened due
to lack of advance planning and
understanding of the situation.
Although few issues arose out
of the situation, many were artificially created. Shortage of
manpower, closure of manufacturing facilities, skeletal transport system, inadequate distribution, limited outlets, and
unusual storage by end users
were few of the causes.
coordination and communication were the primary elements which badly impacted
supply chains during the crisis. Probably this crisis has
created an opportunity for the

overall gaps in the system and

them up to avoid similar situation in near future.
hat will be the future
strategy to accept
challenges and deliver?
Even though it is an everevolving service for the society, there is always scope to
improve the efficiency and
manage the supply chain effectively. Automation-friendly
processes to assure agile service delivery, recruiting multiskilled people, maintaining
health, hygiene and safety at
workplace, framework for
building skills in disaster risk
management are some of the
issues which need attention.
Various types of transportation systems are the backbone of con nect ivit y and
should be kept open and running for essential goods distribution and related services
even during extended lockdowns. Similarly, all types of
communication systems need
to be kept live for seamless exchange of data and information. This is a very powerful
tool to remain alert at all times,
especially during crisis hours.
