We, the Pekuakamiulnuatsh, First Nation of Pekuakami (Lac
Saint-Jean), are part of the Eastern Algonquian family.
Sometimes referred to as Montagnais, or simply Indians, we are
a people with nomadic roots and a traditional lifestyle based on
seasonal movement within our territory, Nitassinan.
We, the
Pekuakamiulnuatsh,
welcome you!
Our ancestors lived mainly from hunting, fishing and gathering.
They made use of the extensive network of lakes and rivers of
Nitassinan to travel throughout the immense territory that they
inhabited.
Human presence in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region dates
back some 5,000 years. It is in that era that the history of our
people began. The Pekuakamiulnuatsh were here before the
arrival of Christopher Columbus in the Americas, the Christian
era or even the construction of the pyramids in Egypt.
