Local Dark Money - Flipbook - Page 98
Afterword
Dark money is inherently anti-republic and antidemocratic, because the purpose and intention
is to influence voters anonymously. Most
voters don’t appreciate how dark money
operates at the local level. In my community
it’s been a game changer.
I spent my early adulthood as a military spouse
and mother, moving frequently - nine moves in
fourteen years. When I finally was able to
settle in one place, I chose Sarasota, FL. Like
many people, I didn’t pay close attention to
local government until a particular issue caught
my attention. I didn’t like what I saw. Military
families make sacrifices for the high ideals this
country was founded upon. The campaign
finance system we’ve created (and its
outcomes) doesn’t honor those sacrifices.
Your local government may not be impacted by
dark money the way mine is. I hope not, and if
that’s the case, that’s great.
