CSI: The Historical Edition – Intriguing
Cold Cases from the Past
This course examines the dark underside of
history, shocking murders from long-ago that
once stunned communities and filled newspapers with sensational headlines. These terrible
incidents, many lingering as unsolved cold
cases provide a stark look at the slowly evolving
criminal justice system of the 19th and early
20th century and the nature of investigations
and crimes in the past. As one generation gave
way to another memory faded and communities eventually forgot the dreadful events,
except in dusty old pages of newspapers or
an occasional diary. Students will examine the
early workings of the criminal justice system
and consider what law enforcement did or
could have done to solve cases and bring about
justice. The course will consider local and national crimes as we take up the subject of CSI,
the historical edition. Note: To enhance course
material presented in the classroom, a field trip
may be included. Instructor: Dixon

Rise and Fall of Prohibition
History of Russian Culture
This class looks at historical attempts to
regulate the consumption of alcohol over the
centuries. While most people are aware of
prohibition in the 1920s, during the so-called
Noble Experiment, attempts to regulate the behavior extends far back into our past. While the
class pays deeper attention to the modern era,
as the nation and the State of Maryland struggled to live with the prohibition law, it takes
a much longer view. During the presentation,
the students will hear colorful stories of rum
runners, moonshiners, bathtub gin, intriguing
personalities, complicated politics, organized
crime, outgunned lawmen, and the temperance movement. Notes: Field trip - Students
are invited to local tavern for lunch on May 7th.
Students pay their own tab. No senior tuition
waiver. Instructor: Dixon
