NSW CFA President’s Report
Bronnie Mackintosh AFSM (CF 2015)
Australian Fire Service Medal.
2019 and 2020 have been a busy
time for the NSW CFA with many new
Fellows joining our ranks, dinners,
functions, Churchill Chats, Roadshows
and of course the recent challenges of
Coronavirus.
Nigel Hadgkiss AM (CF 1989)
Member of the Order of Australia
for significant service to the
building and construction sector,
to public administration, and to law
enforcement.
One thing we are very thankful for
is that the Committee decided two
years ago to move towards virtual
committee meetings on the Zoom
application. We are therefore very
familiar with the video conferencing
system and have continued
unaffected to meet and plan in recent
months.
John Bennett AO (CF 2000)
Officer of the Order of Australia
for distinguished service to the
law through prolific authorship of
biographies of eminent members of
the legal profession.
The big challenge for all of us is the
limitations on social gatherings and
meetings and have had to cancel (or
at least postpone) planned events for
the foreseeable future. At the time of
writing we are however planning our
first virtual Churchill Chat.
We congratulate six NSW Fellows
who were honoured in the June 2019
and January 2020 Australian Honours:
Bernard Shakeshaft (CF 2014)
Awarded the title of Australia’s Local
Hero in honour of his work with
disadvantaged rural youth.
Brad Norman AM (CF 2002)
Member of the Order of Australia
for significant service to science as a
marine biologist.

Fellowships in Sydney, Nowra, Bega,
Wagga Wagga, Dubbo, Broken Hill,
Newcastle, Tamworth, Ballina and
Tumut.
In March 2019 we held a very
successful Churchill Education Chat
in the city where about forty people
enjoyed three presentations from
Fellows working within the education
sector. It is proposed that these
Education Sector Chats will continue
on the in March each year.
A number of NSW Fellows travelled
to Tasmania in April 2019 for the
biennial Churchill Fellows Convention
in Hobart and we were treated to
wonderful hospitality and an excellent
array of demonstrations, talks and
site visits. We wish to congratulate
Tasmania for an exceptional
programme of events.
Our Medallion Dinner on 7 June
2019 was highly successful, with 80
members in attendance and enjoyed
a wonderful opportunity as returned
Fellows received their well-earned
medallions and recounted many tales
of wonderful experiences during their
travels around the world.
In August 2019 we held the first of our
annual Medallion Recipients Churchill
Chats where we invited a panel of 5
recently returned Fellows to present
on their research and progress. These
Medallion Chats will continue each
year however it is anticipated that our
2020 Chat will be postponed due to
Coronavirus restrictions.
The new Fellows Presentation,
followed by Dinner on 1 November
were again a highlight of the year
with the ceremony at Government
House with our new Governor Her
Excellency The Honourable Margaret
Beazley AO.
The dinner in the Strangers Dining
Room of Parliament House was an
amazing evening and great to see
