Operation Walk Winnipeg
F
or a week in November 2018, a team of
60 healthcare professionals—including surgeons, anesthetists, nurses,
physiotherapists, medical device reprocessing specialists and support workers—will
travel to Managua, Nicaragua. There, they
will perform over 70 knee and hip replacements for the local community.
Their journey is part of Operation Walk
Winnipeg, a not-for-profit, volunteer medical service organization whose purpose is to
provide surgical treatments to patients who
live in developing countries, and who have
little or no access to care for arthritis or other
debilitating bone and joint diseases.
This will be the seventh mission for the
Operation Walk Winnipeg team and the
sixth to Nicaragua.
The Concordia Hospital and Concordia
Foundation support Operation Walk Winnipeg as part of our mission and mandate to
reach out and give back to the wider community—including our global neighbours
and friends.
Nicaragua is one of the poorest nations in
the western hemisphere. Most Nicaraguans
do not have the luxury of an automobile,
and must walk long distances to work or the
nearest bus route. Much of the country is
mountainous. Buildings aren’t constructed
with thought to those with limited mobility. The patients who receive care from
Operation Walk Winnipeg have been suffering with debilitating arthritis for years;
many have lived with pain for decades. Their
determination and drive are amazing. To see
a patient who knows no English speaking to
her healthcare team, and pointing to her new
knee replacement with tears rolling down
her cheeks while saying “Gracias, Gracias,
The patients who receive care from Operation Walk Winnipeg have been suffering with debilitating arthritis for years; many have lived with pain
for decades.
Gracias” is a powerful and moving moment
for everyone.
Operation Walk employs no paid staff;
the entire medical team donates their time
and energy. The primary fundraising for the
mission is the Operation Walk Winnipeg's
annual Gala Dinner. This event has grown
in support and ensures the team is able to
continue providing life-changing surgeries
in Nicaragua.
The 2018 Operation Walk Gala happens
Thursday, May 31 at The Gates on Roblin.
